Getting started

How does Articulate work?

Pick a drill from the library or use the one suggested on the home screen. Tap the record button. Read the phrase out loud. Articulate uses Apple on-device speech recognition to score your pronunciation and tell you which sounds landed and which slipped. Three attempts per drill. Best score saves.

Why does Articulate need my microphone?

Because we score your pronunciation by listening to you. The audio goes from the iPhone microphone straight to Apple's on-device speech recognizer. It does not leave your phone.

Why does Articulate need Speech Recognition permission?

iOS requires this permission to run the on-device speech recognizer even when no audio is sent to Apple servers. Articulate uses the requiresOnDeviceRecognition setting, which keeps audio off Apple servers.

Scoring

What does the phoneme breakdown mean?

Each English word is made up of a sequence of sounds called phonemes. We highlight the ones that the drill is targeting. After you record, the panel shows which target phonemes Articulate detected correctly, and which were heard as something else. For example, your /θ/ in "think" landing as /s/ would show up as /θ/ → /s/.

What is a passing score?

75 or above. At that level, Articulate marks the drill as completed. You can keep recording to improve, but the lesson stays marked completed.

Subscriptions

How do I start the free trial?

Tap any locked drill or open the paywall from Settings. Pick the annual plan and tap Start 7-day free trial. You will be asked to confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password. After the 7-day trial, you will be charged the annual price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

How do I cancel?

Open iPhone Settings, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, tap Articulate, and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancellation prevents future charges. Your current period remains active until its end date.

How do I restore a purchase on a new device?

Open Settings inside the app, tap Restore purchases, and confirm with your Apple ID. Your subscription will be restored if it is tied to the same Apple ID.

What is the abandon offer?

If you dismiss the main paywall without purchasing, we surface a one-time offer of 50 percent off your first year. The annual plan renews at the regular price after the first year.

Data and privacy

Does any of my audio leave my iPhone?

No. Articulate has no server. The audio file is written to your sandboxed Recordings folder, fed to the on-device speech recognizer, and the score is saved on your device. We do not have a backend that receives audio.

How do I delete my data?

Settings → Delete all my data. This wipes attempts, recordings, mastery, and progress. Articulate then returns to its welcome state.

Troubleshooting

The microphone meter does not move

Open iPhone Settings, tap Privacy & Security → Microphone, and confirm Articulate is enabled. If the toggle is on, try restarting the app.

My score is much lower than I expect

On-device recognition works best in a quiet room with your iPhone within 12 inches of your mouth. Background noise, fast speech, or very soft speech can drop the score. Try a single phrase at moderate pace.

I see "Subscription products not found"

This usually means the App Store cannot reach our subscription configuration. Confirm your iPhone has internet, pull to refresh the paywall, or try again later. If the issue persists, email [email protected].
